One of my favorite things to do when I arrive at a new country is to hit up the local market and check out what kind of candy, chips, and snacks they have. I feel like you can tell a lot about a place that way!
POCKY // JAPAN: Pocky are sweet biscuit sticks covered in a variety of flavors such as strawberry, chocolate and green tea.

WHITE RABBIT // CHINA: Although these creamy milk candies come from China, they are super popular in the Philippines as well. They also have a green tea flavor I have yet to try!

SMARTIES // ENGLAND, EUROPE, CANADA… basically everywhere but the US: These smarties are not the same cheapie candies you left at the bottom of your trick or treat pumpkin every halloween. These are candy coated chocolate, kind of like a supersized m&m made with better quality chocolate.

DE LA ROSA // MEXICO: These are another favorite southern california gas station find of mine. Instead of almond, these marzipan are made with peanuts.

KOROVKA // RUSSIA: These “cow” candies are caramels that are buttery, chewy, and creamy all at the same time. I always looked forward to packages from my in-laws, because they put them in every care package they sent to us over the years. It was really difficult to not eat them all in one sitting.

TURKISH DELIGHT // TURKEY: There are hundreds and hundreds of varieties of turkish delight to be found in shops all over Istanbul. These chewy confections are usually filled with nuts and fruits and dusted with powdered sugar.
VERO MANGO // MEXICO: Sprinkling fruit with chili powder is popular in Mexico, and southern California as well. I love when I find these chili-mango pops at the local gas station.

FOX // SWEDEN: In addition to a sweet tooth, I also have a sour tooth (if that’s a thing) so these chewy lemon candies from sweden really do the trick

PASTILLES DE VICHY // FRANCE : I popped these mint candies into my mouth about once every block while walking around Paris.

OPAL // ICELAND : Icelandic people are obsessed with black licorice, or Lakkris. While I couldn’t get behind the chewy, salted, or chocolate covered variety, I really liked these Lakkris lozenges.

GREEN TEA KITKAT // JAPAN : The Tokyo Narita airport is full of strange kitkat flavors that I could not resist buying when I had a layover there on my way to the Philippines. Some flavors, such as Rum Raisin and Baked Potato were a miss. But the green tea flavor is even better than the original chocolate flavor. It’s white chocolate lightly flavored with green tea, so even if you’re not the biggest fan of matcha or green tea you will still enjoy these.

SOFT EATING LICORICE // AUSTRALIA: Soft eating licorice is about 12 million times better than the licorice us americans grew up eating. We’ve been cheated all these years. Nowadays you can easily find australian licorice at places like trader joes and whole foods, BUT I have yet to find blueberry, my favorite flavor, in any US stores.
